A small community rink board is doing what it can to keep its local rink from deteriorating.

The Community of Shamrock, with a population of 20, recently took to the crowd-funding website gofundme.com in order to try to raise money for a much-needed roof repair.

Kerri Fortin is a board member for the rink and said that between what they have in the bank and what they have raised so far, they are very close to their goal.

"Right now we have the money to buy the actual products to put on the roof. So if we just got a little bit extra to put in for the labour we could hopefully do it this summer or fall."

Fortin added that they do have some grant applications as well, but that those avenues can be a challenge as it's more difficult for smaller communities.

"People are quite excited about it. They're pretty optimistic that we can come up with the funds. We've applied for probably three or four grants (but) whether we'll get them or not being such a small community I'm not sure. But it seems like all of the locals are sure rallying."

Like most community rinks, the Shamrock rink is a hub for the surrounding communities as well. As Glenn Knudsen, a former board member explains, saying that shamrock will typically serve as the rink from north of Gravelbourg, to the south of Chaplin and east of Hodgeville.

In fact, the rink's bi-annual JamCan curling event which, in a non-COVID world would function as its primary fundraiser, would bring in 16 to 20 teams at each event.
