Blue Jays end slide with extra-innings win over Cubs

Danny Jansen hit a walk-off RBI single to bring home Matt Chapman in the 11th inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 to snap a three-game losing skid. 

Jansen also hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh and Chapman hit an RBI single of his own in the eighth as the Jays came back from down 4-0.

The three-game set continues tonight with Kevin Gausman starting for Toronto against former Blue Jay Marcus Stroman, who was given a warm welcome back to Rogers Centre with a pre-game video tribute on Monday.

Serena, four Canadians win opening matches at US Open

Serena Williams is not ready to ride off into the sunset just yet. 

The 23-time grand slam champion won her first-round match at her final US Open with a straight sets win over Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in front of a sold-out crowd under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Williams, a six-time winner at Flushing Meadows, will face number two seed Anett Kontveit of Estonia on Wednesday. 

Meanwhile, Canadians Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, and Felix Auger-Aliassime all won their opening round matches on Monday. Denis Shapovalov will look to keep the streak going when he faces Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland this afternoon in his first-round match.

Canada faces US in battle for first at Women's Worlds

There are four games on today's schedule as round-robin play ends at the Women's World Hockey Championship in Denmark, but one that most hockey fans will be watching will be the showdown between Canada and the United States.

Both teams are unbeaten so far in the tournament and Canada has won the last five games against the US, including last year's Women's Championship final in Calgary, and the gold medal game at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The quarterfinals are on Thursday with the medal games on Sunday.

Canada steamrolls Panama in FIBA World Cup Qualifying

Canada men’s basketball team remained unbeaten in FIBA World Cup qualifying with a 106-50 rout of Panama on Monday. 

Detroit Pistons forward Kelly Olynyk scored 18 points for Canada, who are the only unbeaten team left in the 12-team Americas zone and are on the brink of officially securing a spot in next year's World Cup with two more qualifying windows to come in November and February.

Canada will be without the services of their NBA stars and head coach Nick Nurse for those final four games with the league's season being underway at those times.

In other basketball news, Canadian RJ Barrett is reportedly close to signing a four-year extension with the New York Knicks worth $120 million. The 22-year-old from Mississauga is set to become the youngest player in Knicks history to sign a $100-million contract.
