A structure fire in the village of Waldeck Friday morning that destroyed a one-car garage is now out.

The blaze broke out around 9:30 a.m. with a call going into the R.M. of Swift Current's fire department at 9:49 a.m.

RM of Swift Current Fire Chief Louis Cherpin said the cause of the fire is still being investigated but was happy with the way his team handled the situation.

"Our guys stepped up and did a tremendous job," he said. "It wasn't the warmest day to fight a fire but at least it was better than last week, so all in all I think the R.M. of Swift Current did an excellent job and I'd like to say kudos to the Swift Current Fire Department for helping as well."

Upon arriving at the scene the garage was fully engulfed in flames and the siding on the house was beginning to melt. The nine-member crew got to work quickly, limiting the damage.

"We were able to save the house from further destruction," he explained. "Then we were able to concentrate our efforts totally on the garage after that. With the help of the City of Swift Current's fire crews bringing us out water, we're able to put that fire out quickly and lessen the loss dramatically."

The crew had the fire - which Cherpin called challenging - extinguished and had begun a quick investigation as of 12:30 p.m. this afternoon.
