This is the time of year when gophers can pose a threat to gardens and flowers, even within Shaunavon town limits.

That's why, every year, the Town puts out traps to catch the pesky little critters.

Ron Phillips is the Director of Operations for the Town of Shaunavon. He says, "We've been trapping right from the beginning. We usually start in the spring. We get them out there as soon as we can to try to keep the numbers down. We have bought more traps. We're up to about 45 traps now so it's almost a full time job to keep somebody going back and forth between them all."

Phillips says they have seen a decrease in gopher numbers since the start of spring, when there were quite a few.

He adds that traps will be moved around to different locations and they concentrate mainly on the area of the Trans Canada Trail. Traps will stay out throughout the summer and fall as long as they continue to catch gophers.
