Ty Lewis scored in overtime as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Swift Current Broncos 3-2 on Friday night.

The team teams battled closely all game long in a game that rightly ended up taking extra time.

“It was a pretty good hockey game actually,” said Broncos Associate Coach Ryan Smith. “I thought both teams battled hard and both goalies were good. It felt like a playoff game.”

The Wheat Kings and Broncos are very close to one another in the standings as Swift Current sits four points ahead of Brandon for second place in the WHL East Division.

“You've got two teams that know each other quite well and pretty tight in the standings,” Smith said. “There wasn't a lot to give out there. They had a power play goal, we hit a couple posts on the power play... I thought our guys battled hard. We started the game much better than we had in the past which was a key. If we can play like that it gives us a chance to win every night.”

The line of Matteo Gennaro, Max Patterson and Kole Gable again had a strong night with Gennaro scoring twice, Patterson getting two assists and Gable chipping in a helper. They have a combined 12 points in their last two games.

“It's nice to see some other guys pop it in,” Smith said. “They're making plays now and feeling like they can make these plays and seeing results.”

Gennaro is now up to 23 points in 15 games since joining the Broncos, Patterson has 11 points in his last 11 games and Gable has 7 in his last 7 games.

Logan Flodell had a strong game for the Broncos stopping 32 of the 35 Wheat Kings shots. Logan Thompson made 24 saves for Brandon.

The Wheat Kings had a distinct power play edge with five compared to only one for Swift Current and got the tying goal in the third period from Evan Weinger on the man advantage.

The Broncos now sit at 27-10-3-0 and are ten points back of Moose Jaw for top spot in the WHL and the East Division. They continue a busy weekend at home against Regina on Saturday and Sunday afternoon against Red Deer.

Swift Current will soon have their full roster in tact again as the World Junior Championship wrapped up on Friday with Broncos sniper Tyler Steenbergen scoring the gold medal winning goal for Canada. Aleksi Heponiemi, Artyom Minulin and Steenbergen could soon return to Swift Current's lineup.
