End of an era: Leader Pharmacy to close after 11 years serving community
A longstanding fixture in the community is preparing to close its doors, marking the end of more than a decade of local care at Leader Pharmacy. Pharmacist and owner Leah Butt announced the pharmacy will close May 1 after 11 years of serving residents, citing ongoing staffing challenges and the personal demands of operating as the sole pharmacist. Since opening in 2015, Leader Pharmacy has been a consistent presence in the community, providing essential health services and building lasting relationships with patients. “It has been a privilege to be part of your care,” Butt said in a letter to patients, thanking the community for its trust and support over the years. Struggles to recruit pharmacists in rural Saskatchewan Butt said the decision comes after years of attempting to recruit additional pharmacists, without success. As staffing levels declined, she became solely responsible for both patient care and managing the business. Despite reducing her hours, she said the demands of the role continued to affect her ability to balance work and family life. The closure will not interrupt patient care, with all prescription records set to be automatically transferred to Dirk Family Pharmacy in Leader. Butt will also be joining that team temporarily to help ensure a smooth transition. “Think of this as a relocation of health-care services to a partner who shares my commitment to patient well-being,” she said. Looking ahead to family and future opportunities While the dispensary will close, the storefront will remain open for the time being as Butt explores options for the building’s future. Looking ahead, she plans to spend more time with her family and assist on the family farm, while also considering future work supporting other rural pharmacies facing similar challenges. The closure reflects broader issues faced by rural health services, where recruitment and retention of professionals continues to be a challenge.
