Maple Creek man pleads guilty after intoxicated attack
A southwest man pleaded guilty this week to a trio of charges stemming from an incident this past August that saw an individual rushed to the hospital requiring stitches and nine charges laid. Andrew Bernhardt appeared in Swift Current Provincial Court on Wednesday morning by video surveillance from custody, pleading guilty to three of the nine charges against him; One count of wounding a person One count of uttering threats One count of assault The Maple Creek resident has one provincial driving ticket to address as well. Judge Jacobson ordered a pre-sentence report, which will take around six weeks to prepare, that will explore Gladue factors. Bernhardt attempted to get in the back door before dragging the complainant outside, throwing him against a vehicle, stomping on him, ripping out the complainant's cochlear hearing device, and throwing a table on his head. Officers located the complainant, who was transported to the hospital needing stitches, and Bernhardt, who was found inside the complainant's home. RCMP reports from the evening in question say that Bernhardt claimed that he was in his own residence and also made sexual comments and threats towards the attending officers and their families. " I don't remember any of this, but I'm going to admit to it." The Crown says that there are enough eyewitnesses and evidence that the judge can accept his guilty pleas without him having to remember the full details. Bernhardt was remanded to appear in court in Swift Current by CCTV on May 20 for sentencing submissions, although he's slated to have his sentencing held in Maple Creek.
