Shaunavon celebrates with Country 1490 launch party
It was a magical Friday in Shaunavon as Country 1490 hit the airwaves with a highly attended station launch party. After 58 years and nine months, CJSN 1490 morphed into southwestern Saskatchewan's newest station at 3:30 p.m. at Smith Field ahead of the Shaunavon Shadows home opener. The station's first song was "Born and Raised" by Shaunavon's own, the Hunter Brothers. "I think it's an awesome opportunity for the town to come together around community sport, and it's a neat opportunity for things to be launched here," Ty Hunter said. "I think it's awesome, it's going back to the roots. That's what I knew it to be growing up. There was one radio station here, and it was a country radio station, and that's what we listened to, and often times influenced by. It makes us feel like we're going back to something very important." A ceremonial coin toss to celebrate the birth of a new station included Ty Hunter, Cypress Hills MLA Doug Steele, Shaunavon Mayor Cal Vance, regional manager Mike Saretsky, Country 94.1 and Country 1490 morning show host Chris Martens, and recently retired but long-time Golden West broadcast technologist Dave Funk. "It's amazing, it's connecting the communities across the southwest," Steele said. "Fifty-nine years we've had the radio service in here, CJSN 1490, and it's just continued on services that we love and appreciate, it's just an awesome day." Fifteen minutes after the station returned to country music, the Local Sports Live broadcast began on Country 1490 and Country 94.1 between the Shadows and the Lumsden Devils. After the first half, five lucky contestants strolled out onto the field for the Big Kick promotion, with one of them earning a shot at $25,000. Andrew Burch and Simon Valentine were the only two to advance past the 10 and 20-yard field goal attempts. Burch just missed his 30-yard attempt to the right, allowing Valentine the chance to kick for $25,000. Valentine was moved back to the 50-yard line for the chance at the big money prize, although his kick came up short. "I just couldn't make the length," Valentine said. "(My hip was hurting), it was a result of practicing this morning... I think it was the most nervous I've ever been... I had a great time." Shaunavon started the second half down 27-16 and was unable to mount a comeback with the Devils moving to 2-0 on the season with a 47-16 victory. Blair Gehl, owner of Blair Gehl's General Auto Sales and a past broadcaster at CJSN 1490, made a generous donation of $200 to the Shadows following the game, which the team used to purchase new equipment. "I have to thank everybody in advance for being supportive of the Shadows football," Gehl said. "My wife Lucy and I are proud to make a donation." Rising Saskatchewan country star Josh Stumpf helped complete the celebration with an hour-long concert that included his hit single Highway Money which is currently ninth on Billboard Canada's country chart. "When I heard we were playing on a football field, I just assumed we were playing on grass, and what you would expect for a small town," he said. "This was awesome, we got the stage, we had the lights, we had the smoke machine, and we had the band. I had such a fun time. "I feel so special, so lucky to be able to do this. This is the dream to be able to go out and play music, especially to have people come out and watch you and to be able to celebrate big wins with other people, such as yourselfs." Stumpf and his band debuted a new set list, including a brand-new single released earlier on Friday, Nobody Roads. "I really like this song," he said. "We did a big radio tour earlier in the year and went coast-to-coast across the country and visited a bunch of stations, showing them a lot of new music. There were a lot of positive reactions to this song. I'm really hoping it's well received and really excited to put it out and see what it does."
