Wildfire arsonist arrested in Saskatoon
Saskatoon Police have arrested a man charged with arson related to a wildfire at Weyakwin. On May 26, 2025, a fire started near Weyakwin, which is located 700km north of Swift Current. An investigation conducted by fire investigators and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency investigated the cause of what became known as the Ditch 2 Fire. It was determined that the fire was caused by a human. Waskesiu RCMP investigation determined that Jason Halkett from La Ronge was to be charged with one count of arson - damage to property. On August 27, 2025, he was arrested by the Saskatoon Police Service in Saskatoon. The 29-year-old appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on August 28.
