The Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats were wearing out the nets in Weyburn over the weekend.

Swift Current won the season opener 7-0 Saturday night and followed that up on Sunday with a 5-2 win over the Goldwings.

Twelve Wildcats found the stat sheet over the weekend, with five of those players recording multi-point weekends.

Taylor Kirwan led the way with five points (2 G, 3 A), while Carissa Hogan (3 G, 1 A), Brooklyn Colborn (1 G, 2 A), last season's leading scorer Taylor Lind (2 G), and rookie Baylee Kirwan (1 G, 1 A) rounded out the multi-point efforts.

Head coach Terry Pavely said the even scoring distribution was a plus to start the season.

"The most positive thing we took out of the weekend was our ability to score goals, and have a variety of players score them," he said. "I mean we have Taylor Lind who is, in my mind, the best offensive player in our league. When we win game two 5-2 and she doesn't get a point, we hope that's a sign of our offensive depth we have this year."

Despite the high-scoring weekend, however, Pavely says there are still a few things he wants to see the team improve upon moving forward.

"We weren't happy with our work ethic, and that's one thing that we want to really instill. Even though we think we've got a lot of offensive skill, we still have to work hard all the time and outwork other teams," he said. "Probably for us, the two things (to work on) are going to be defensive-zone coverage and how we play when we don't have the puck."

In net for the Diamond Energy Wildcats, Harper Davey, who had a 6-9 record with 2.91 GAA in 2016-17, and rookie Amaya Giraudier both were credited with wins over the weekend. The veteran Davey claimed the shutout in Game 1 on Saturday.

The Wildcats now have 12 days off before they're back in action September 30 and October 1 when they host a weekend series against the Regina Rebels.
