Jeff Chambers says he was just having one of those days out on the course earlier this week in the opening round of the Taylormade ProAm tournament at Moon Lake Golf and Country Club.

An opening round -7 (65) put the Head Golf Professional at Elmwood Golf and Country Club three shots ahead of the field after day one of the two-day tournament.

"You don't just shoot 65 for no apparent reason," Chambers said. "We played one side (of Moon Lake's three nine-hole courses) we don't normally play, so it was new and target-oriented but I was hitting it very straight, and had a good putting thought that kept me calm. It was really exciting thing to be a part of - every time I stood up to the ball I felt like I could make the shot... and I did."

Chambers kept his game and the momentum rolling into day two, where an aggressive mentality helped him battle through what he and the field called "extremely windy conditions".

"Day two, you have to keep the pedal down, It's what I do with all of my coaching. I tell my players to not be afraid to go low - dare to go low. So let's say you're at -5, try to get to -6 - don't think that it's good enough ever. So I tried to take that same mindset," he said.

With a decent three-stroke cushion on second place however, the reality of the situation can affect - albeit briefly - even one of the more decorated golf instructors and professionals in the province.

"On the first hole I felt nervous, and ended up bogeying it - that was kind of a wake up call. I stood on the next tee and I told myself 'either you man up and hit this like you can, or you're going to blow this.'"

He proceeded to rip a drive down the middle of the fairway, hit a wedge shot to within one foot, and make a bounce-back birdie on the second hole.

"From there on in, I knew I had the game to win and I was able to hit with confidence all day," he said.

Chambers finished the tournament five shots ahead of second place at -9 after a final round of -2 (70), tied for the best round of the day.

The win marks the second for an Elmwood Golf Pro in less than one month, after Assistant Golf Professional Brennan Rumancik, who finished in eighth place at the Taylormade ProAm at +3, won the 2017 Saskatchewan Zone PGA Championship in mid-July at The Legends in Warman.

"It's just nice that right here in Elmwood we have two very competitive golf pros that are pretty good out in the circuit," Chambers said. "It speaks volumes for our academy that we have here - one of the best practice facilities in the province - it really helps us keep our games up."

Also in the win, Chambers gains exemption into the 2018 PGA of Canada Championship.

"It's pretty awesome. I played in it before seven years ago, and actually a claim to fame of mine was that I knocked off the number one player in the country (in match-play)," he said. "It's just nice to get back into the spotlight and play with some of the best players in Canada."
