The Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats were on the road against the Melville Prairie Fire this past weekend, working a split in the two-game set.

Melville won Saturday's game 5-4 in a back-and-forth affair.

The seesaw (or teeter-totter depending on your preference) lifted in the Prairie Fire's favour first, as they scored on the power play in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Tilting back the other way, Taylor Kirwan scored in her first game back in the Wildcats' lineup to make it 1-1 with 7:30 left in the second - that started the flurry of goals.

Three more would be scored in the final minutes of the middle period - Melville notched their second at the 4:31 mark, Taylor Kirwan scored her second of the game on the power play 25 seconds later, and Melville regained the lead with two minutes left.

The Prairie Fire would stretch their lead to 4-2 with a goal three minutes into the third - a lead that would hold for over half the period.

With 6:11 left in the game Crystal Wale managed to put Swift to within one with her second goal of the season. But that would only last a mere 21 seconds as Allison Hayhurst extended the lead back to a pair.

That 5-3 lead would stand until the Wildcats added their second power play goal of the game with 26 seconds left. Layne Hryhoriw was the goal scorer.

"We were happy with the way we battled at the end, but our execution just wasn't where it needed to be in that game," said Terry Pavely, head coach of the Wildcats. "You've got to be careful - they (Melville) work hard and they capitalized on our mistakes. That was really the difference in the game - it wasn't that we were real bad, but just we weren't where we needed to be."

Heading into Sunday's game, the Wildcats looked to capitalize on the Prairie Fire's aggressive style of play as a way to salvage points from the weekend.

"One thing with Melville is they're a hard team - they play hard, they skate hard - but they also play really physical," Pavely said. "Depending on the refs they get, some nights they tend to take a lot of penalties."

Special teams proved to be the key in the rematch as Swift Current won 5-1, backed by a 4-for-10 effort on the power play.

Tenelle Lind scored her second power play goal in three games to put the Wildcats on the board in the opening minutes of the game.

The Wildcats would go 2-for-3 with the man advantage in the first period as Taylor Lind added a power play marker with under three minutes to go in the frame.

Another goal would be added while Swift Current was on the power play - this time a short-handed Prairie Fire point to make it a 2-1 game.

Yet as the trend continued, Sara Kendall put another power play puck past Prairie Fire goalie Cheyenne Jamieson midway through the second period.

After nearly 22 minutes between goals, defenceman Toni Theaker ended the mini drought with an unassisted mark.

The fourth power play goal of the game came just 40 seconds after Theaker made it a three-goal game. Forward Brooklyn Colborn closed scoring in the game with 7:38 remaining for the 5-1 finish.

"Our power play was really good. Scoring four goals on the power play makes it pretty tough for Melville, and really against any team," said Pavely, who added that holding Melville to 0-for-8 on their own power play was a gritty performance.

"Our penalty-kill was good. Special teams was really the difference in that game, and we were the better team on specialty teams."

Amaya Giraudier made 19 saves in the win, and now carries the fifth best goals-against-average (2.12 GAA) in the league.

In captain Taylor Kirwan's first weekend back since her stint in Russia with Team Canada's Female U18 team, the defenceman racked up 2 goals and 4 assists - an addition that certainly was felt through the lineup, according to her head coach.

In fact, after Taylor Lind was out of the lineup on Saturday, Sunday's contest was the first game in nearly a month that both Taylors were on the ice at the same time.

Now, the Wildcats have three weeks of practice to be able to look at all areas of their game as the regular season draws to a close.

Swift Current (10-9-1-3) next heads to North Battleford to take on the Sharks (7-18-0-0) on February 10-11.
