Saturday afternoon the Frontier Bowling Alley was filled with fundraising, bowling, and beachwear. Though it's not your typical mix, it was the sight of the 31st-annual Sask Abilities Ability Bowl.

The annual event's theme this year was the 'Beach Bowl' and saw 40 teams and about 200 bowlers dress up in their favourite beachwear.

Kimi Duzan, the regional director for Sask Abilities, said that they were able to raise $105,102 for Sask Abilities surpassing last year's total of $70,699.

She said that the significant growth in the amount of money raised is a sign of support that they have from the Swift Current area.

"I think it means that this community continues to support and embrace Sask Abilities including people of all abilities," she said. "It also means whenever possible people are going to share their generosity and their financial support to the programs and services here at the Swift Current branch. Our vision here at Sask Abilities is working together to build inclusive communities for people with all abilities, and that can't happen without working together which is truly the sense that we have from Swift Current and our region of the province."

Fundraising began with the Winter Kick-Off, then 50/50 sales from Broncos games awarded at the Buffalo Brew Pub which raised about $6,000 and a wing night which raised over $10,000, along with the actual Ability Bowl. The 200 bowlers split between 40 teams made a total of 1,500 pledges contributed to the over $105,000 raised.

Duzan said it means a lot to see all the support they've received.

"It's absolutely heartwarming for me, all of the staff, and individuals served by Sask Abilities to see the community support," she said. "Coming and joining in having the fun, providing the financial resources it wonderfully encouraging to be embraced and included in this community."

The beach theme wasn't the only thing new to the ability bowl as they had 'celebrity bowlers' come and kick off each shift.

"We've often had a celebrity kick off the day, but this year we had a celebrity kick off each shift, and that was exciting," she said. "We had the deputy mayor (George Bowditch), the MLA (Everett Hindley), the Member of Parliment (David Anderson), we had the Manager from Scotiabank (Ben Nesbitt). We had Joe Carnahan come join us, and the hockey side we had Larry Johnson (Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame inductee) and that really added a lot of fun to the day."
