July 10-14 was Child and Youth Care in Saskatchewan.

"This is the 4th annual child and youth in care week in the province," explained Social Services Minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor. "And part of it is to help us recognize, thank and affirm the voices of some of our kids that we have in care both now and formerly."

Part of the week also to recognize the work of one of their partners, Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network who are a non-profit organization that help with youth who are 14-24 years old, and are in or from government care.

They will be holding an awards banquet tonight which the Minister was excited to attend.

"Adults nominate young individuals who have been in care or are currently in care who made really positive contributions to our community."

She add that events like this are important for the community as well as those in care.

"I think a lot of our kids in care feel forgotten. One of the things that the Children's Advocate has raised, and part of his undertaking of the portfolio since he became the advocate is that he wants to provide youth with a voice."

"We do have some challenges when it comes to Child Welfare in the province of Saskatchewan so I think this is one way for us to really value and acknowledge the voices of young people. And also points us in a number of directions where we may improve some of the services and supports we provide."

"These are young people who are thinking about their future. Part of our work with the Youth and Care Network is starting to enable young individuals to view themselves as participants in a larger community so part of entering into adulthood. If we don't engage young people in their community as they grow into their teen years, then it's going to be difficult to engage them in their communities as adults."
