Swift Current's cemetery prices will be a little steeper this year after city council agreed to raise them on Monday night.

The motion that passed will increase rates for interments, disinterments, lots/niches all by 10 per cent this year and then again on February 1, 2020.

A $5-increase will be applied this year and next year for monument installation permits for companies to access the City's cemetery.

Since 2010 the City's recovery rate has fluctuated between 70-77 per cent (with the exception of 60 per cent in 2014), a rate that city council wants to see continue to climb.

Last year the City recovered 75 per cent, a percent higher than the City had budgeted for.

Sale of lots/plots accounted for $63,481, burial fees $80,235, sales of niches $19,196, and monument permits $3,892.

Tim Marcus, CAO for the City of Swift Current, said that one benefit the City gives is a cheaper lot price to residents of Swift Current.

The cemetery fees are not set to be revisited again until early 2021.

The City of Swift Current owns Hillcrest Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Burial Park, and Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
