A pair of Swift Current teenagers are trying to brighten the mood around the Cypress Regional Hospital.

On Monday 16-year-old Avery Andres and 15-year-old Tamara Gleim installed a colourful 12-piece rock snake at Swift Current's hospital after spending last week crafting the creation.

Andrea Orr, a private healthcare worker for Andres who suffers from Rubenstein-Taybi Syndrome, said she came across the idea on social media as someone had created a rock snake at the Melfort Hospital. She then

Avery Andres (left) and Tamara Gleim (right) showed it to the girls who love crafts and the idea took off.

"I showed it to them one day when they wanted to do a craft and they were all over it, they were just all about it," Orr said. "The girls decided how many rocks they were going to paint, and what colours, and how they were going to lay them out. Then we painted them all, it took us a couple of days after school of getting together to do it."

The duo spent last Thursday and Friday taking their ideas and applying them via paintbrushes to the dozen rocks they'd chosen.

"We really just wanted it to bring some joy, in times when joy is hard to find it seems," she said. "And we also just wanted to recognize all of the essential workers in the community, especially the healthcare heroes."

Since the work of art was placed in the rock garden on the west side of the hospital's main entrance, it's grown in size as residents of the community have added to it.

"I was just up there this morning (Thursday) because I've been getting hundreds of messages from people and I went up this morning to check it out and it's almost doubled in length," she said. "The girls are so excited that the community has just jumped on board and decided to show their support as well."
