The number of visitors to the Swift Current Branch Library continued to grow in 2017, and that was a topic at their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday.

Head Librarian Andrea McCrimmon said they've had an increase in visits of 28 per cent over the last four years (with 2017 as the most recent).

"Our in-person visits were up again for the fourth year in a row; they were over 103,000 in-person visits," she said. "Our circulation was also staying really strong, so people are checking out lots of books and DVDs and our eBook circulation went up this year again, so people are borrowing lots of eBooks and eAudioBooks, so the library has been a very busy place over the past year."

Another focus during the AGM was on the public support after the March 2017 budget slashed funding for libraries, but was ultimately restored after public disapproval.

"We saw so much community support last year from the funding crisis and we were just so grateful to see how much people actually value their library," said McCrimmon. "I want to thank everyone who came out and supported the library during the funding crisis by contacting their MLAs and coming out to the rally and signing their petitions. And it worked, and the provincial government thankfully listened to the people and restored the library funding last year."
