The Second Annual Boomtown Cup Lawnmower Races go this afternoon, July 20, at the track located behind the Shaunavon Hospital starting at one o'clock.

This year's event features about 23 machines, with a first place prize of $1,000, and includes a lawnmower raffle, a steak supper and a cabaret.

The races last year saw over 1,000 people out, and raised just shy of $30,000.

Riley Kornfeld from the organizing committee says the group originally decided to do the races to add more events to Boomtown Days and draw more people out.

He said, "Some people spend a ton of hours on them. You can do as little as just a pulley swap, but most guys are going as far down as stripping them right to nothing and building them from scratch. It's exciting. It's something different. It's pretty fast paced."

Admission is by silver collection and all money raised goes to The Southwest Chronic Disease Support Group, The Splash Park and the proposed Dog Park in Shaunavon.
