Saskatchewan union COPE 397 held a rally and town hall meeting in Swift Current on Thursday and Friday in hopes rallying southwest Saskatchewan's support against the proposed changes to Bill 40.

The changes to Bill 40 would allow the Sask Party government to take 49% of any Crown corporation and wind down, sell off or dissolve of without consultation with the public or a referendum on the matter.

"We are trying to educate Saskatchewan residents (with these rallies and town hall meeting)," said Kim Wilson, president of COPE 397. "We want them understanding how important a Crown corporation is and how important it is to keep them in Saskatchewan."

Swift Current was the 13th stop for COPE 397, as they've been travelling around the province trying to educate Saskatchewan the implications of Bill 40 if passed through legislation.

"People of Saskatchewan need to realize we need to keep our Crown corporations in the province, we keep the money in the province and we've to stop letting it leave the province," Wilson said after Thursday night's town hall meeting at the Holiday Inn Express. "If anything is sold off, chance are it's not going to be coming back into the hands of Saskatchewan, it's going to be going to private companies."

The changes to Bill 40 have been read through twice in the legislature, with the third and final time coming in a few weeks.
