The SCBEX awards didn't just honour businesses, but also one citizen for their contributions towards the City of Swift Current.

The 2019 Citizen of the Year was Stephanie Prpick-Boss.

"It's a great honour and is definitely an incredible moment for myself to keep moving forward."

Prpick-Boss said that her Swift Current had been a new start for herself.

"When I first moved to Swift Current things were very difficult," she said. "The highest most stressful time was when we lived up north. It was to a point where I told my husband it's time to go home to Saskatchewan and were grateful to have the opportunity to move to Swift Current."

Prpick-Boss has hosted events in the city that have advocated for both physical and mental health, including marathons and bringing Robb Nash to speak to students in the southwest about suicide, to name a few things.

"One of the biggest moments that I even started to be more active was in January 2016, my family and I attended the Swift Current United Way's breakfast where Sheldon Kennedy spoke, and I've looked to him as a leader," she said. "I've looked at Mayor Perrault, Everett Hindley, Karla Wiens, Mike Rogowski and their support and the advocacy for mental health that gave me the confidence that people are listening and they're very supportive of that topic of mental health and to take action steps."

"To help find ways to prevent and awareness and for those people and their families, resources and services that are available," she continued. "It is a difficult time for everyone, but there is light at the end of the tunnel."

Prpick-Boss said to the person or persons who nominated her, that she is truly grateful.

"I would say thank you for taking the time for recognizing what I've been doing in the community, and I hope one of those events was significant for them and made a difference, and thank you to whoever submitted the nomination."

Devon Oman and Robin Wall were also nominated. For the full list of winners from the 2019 SCBEX awards, click here
