The city of Swift Current has seen several delays to their annual street sweeping program, with weather conditions being the key factor.

Street sweeping operations on main arterial roadways initially began on April 8 but were quickly hindered as cooler weather and snow set back into the city.

The transition into residential streets was initially set to begin this morning, although the City announced yesterday that the first two scheduled days of the program will be temporarily postponed.

Swift Current's General Manager of Infrastructure and Operations, Mitch Minken said that the program will resume once temperatures reach a consistent temperature above freezing overnight.

“We're going to get periodic snow in April and it we have to have the temperatures consistently above freezing in order to get that equipment out and get it going,” he said. “So typically, that puts us around the end of April, beginning of May.

The Streets and Roadways Division is responsible for the sweeping of all city streets in the spring.

Minken added that crews are ready to go as soon as the weather permits.

“We're getting prepared for season change and we always are proactive and have all that equipment ready to roll.”

The city also reminds residents that each Friday is a scheduled catch-up day and to park off the street if your street was not completed on the scheduled day.
