With seeding just around the corner, a reminder that Saskatchewan's Ministry of Agriculture could always use more crop reporters.

Volunteer Crop Reporters help provide the raw data the Ministry uses to put together their weekly Crop Report during the growing season.

Shannon Friesen is a Crop Specialist with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture.

"Some producers and agrologist will actually base it on their local area, some will talk to other producers in their area," Friesen said. "What they do is fill out the information ranging from how much rainfall you got that week, what are seeding conditions like and how much crop you have left out in the field."

She says crop reporters would report to the ministry once a week with information on what's happening in their area with seeding, disease and pest management, rainfall, harvest progress and more.

She also says they have a number of vacant RM positions for crop reporters right now.

"The majority of the empty spots in the province tend to be around the southeast part of the province. That Weyburn and Estevan region, of course in the Yorkton and Melville area and even around Melfort and a little bit of everywhere else of course. We will take extra volunteers even if we already have a reporter in their RM," Friesen said.
