Saskatchewan's Under-19 men’s volleyball team, with Griffin Duncalfe of Swift Current and Shaye Wall of Wymark, was named the team of the year at the Saskatchewan Sport Awards on Thursday in Regina.

The team won the 2022 Volleyball Canada Cup, where they defeated Alberta in straight sets, and followed that up with a gold medal at the Canada Summer Games in Ontario’s Niagara Region, also defeating Alberta in five sets. It was the first time Saskatchewan had won gold at the event since 1987.

Shaye has been playing with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks for the last two seasons while Griffin is attending his first year of university in Ontario.

Other award winners include Emily Clark, who won Female Athlete of the Year after playing with Canada's Olympic gold medal-winning women's hockey team in Beijing, and the Male Athlete of the Year was snowboarder Mark McMorris, who won his third straight Olympic bronze medal at those games and recently captured a record 22nd Winter X Games medal with gold in Slopestyle this past weekend in Aspen.
