A representative of Duncairn Reservoir Migratory Bird Sanctuary Stakeholders was presented a plaque for their commitment to some of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.  

The Honourable Russ Mirasty, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan presented the award to Dwight Lemon at an event hosted by the Regional Centre for Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development in Saskatchewan. (RCE) The group was recognized for educating the public about the proposed expansion of irrigation and it’s effects on the conservation of Reid Lake.  

Dwight Lemon, co-chair of the Duncairn Reservoir Migratory Bird Sanctuary Stakeholders was the recipient of the prestigious award. 

“There were other groups similar to ours at the awards banquet,” said Lemon. “It's not just our battle, it's a battle province wide by be it the drainage of the wetlands or lack of a better policy.” 

Of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, three were recognized by the group. The goals met were number six: Clean Drinking Water, number 14: Life Below Water and number 15: Life On Land.

The original proposal for irrigation looked to take up to 62 per cent of the lake’s volume, damaging the habitats of several species, as well as the ecosystem at large.  

 
"It's very critical that the government pays greater attention to what their policies are doing to the environment the recreational aspect as well,” Lemon remarked.
