Today's carbon tax increase of 23 per cent has prompted some Sask. residents to gather at the Alta. border in protest.

Delays are expected along Highway 1 throughout the day. RCMP are currently on the scene.

Organizer of the event, Kookoo Sint, is expecting around 3,000 people to attend throughout the day.

"We're out here today because there are people that can't afford to live anymore," he said. "They have to make hard choices, whether it's their medication, their rent, their food, their utilities -- and the government doesn't seem to understand this."

As of 9 a.m. the highway is still open, but motorists are advised to slow down and watch for people along the road when driving by.

Before heading out on the roads, check the Highway Hotline for the latest updates.
