Swift Current is playing host to the CURLSASK Provincial Under-21 Curling Championship this weekend with six boys’ teams and eight girls' teams looking to represent our province at nationals in Quebec this March. 

Local curlers competing include skips Rachel Schlechter, Andra Todd and their teams, and Aryn Thibault, the second for Cara Kesslering’s team from Saskatoon, who captured the provincial Under-18 championship in December. 

The opening draw is at 10:30 this morning with an opening ceremony at 7:00pm this evening from the Swift Current Curling Club. The event continues through the weekend with the finals set for 3:00pm on Sunday afternoon.

Wanner gets OT winner as Warriors beat Blades

Maximus Wanner scored 45 seconds into overtime to give the Moose Jaw Warriors a 5-4 win over Saskatoon on Wednesday night to sweep a home-and-home with the Blades.

In other WHL action, Carson Lambos scored twice and Connor McClennon and Zach Benson had four points each as Winnipeg routed Prince Albert 8-1, former Bronco Raphael Pelletier scored his first goal with the Everett Silvertips and had an assist on Ben Hemmerling's OT winner in a 4-3 win over Lethbridge, and Jaxsen Wiebe scored twice as Prince George beat Calgary 6-5 to pick up their first win on the Central Division swing.

In the NHL, Brady Tkachuk scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Meanwhile, Steven Stamkos scored his 500th career NHL goal as he picked up a hat trick in Tampa Bay’s 5-2 win over Vancouver, and Mikko Rantanen and Artturi Lehkonen had two goals each as Colorado beat Calgary 4-1. Four Canadian teams are in action tonight with Toronto hosting Winnipeg, Montreal welcoming Florida and Edmonton hosting the Lightning.

Leylah falls in second round of Aussie Open

Montreal’s Leylah Fernandez fell in straight sets to No. 4 seed Caroline Garcia of France in second-round action at the Australian Open early Thursday morning. The 2021 US Open finalist was the lone Canadian remaining in the women’s singles draw.

In men's play, sixth-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal will face Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo tonight and Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario takes on Hubert Hurkaczv of Poland overnight.
