57's lose hard-fought Westerns opener

The Swift Current U13 57's dropped a thrilling opening game yesterday at the National Western Championships. 

After six lead changes, the Carillon Sultans edged the host 57's 15-14. Swift Current's Kyron Watson and Quinn Bolton both had three RBI and two hits in the one-run loss. 

The 57's will be back in action this afternoon against the Parkland Twins who ousted the Victoria Seawolves 12-1 on day one. Tune into the Eagle 94.1 at 3:20pm for local sports live coverage of that game brought to you by B&A Petroleum. 

The 57’s wrap up the round-robin tomorrow against the Victoria Seawolves at 11:30am.

Sask Lacrosse and Volleyball teams into playoffs at Canada Games

Carter Michaluk had a goal and an assist as Team Saskatchewan lost 5-3 to Quebec Thursday to wrap up round-robin in men’s lacrosse at the Canada Games. Saskatchewan plays BC in the quarterfinal today. 

Meanwhile, Griffin Duncalfe, Shaye Wall and the Saskatchewan men’s volleyball team beat New Brunswick in straight sets to finish round robin with a 2-and-1 record and will face Manitoba in the quarterfinal today. 

Comp Colts begin early preparations for football season

Some students don't want to think of returning to school just yet, but others will be next week. 

The Swift Current Comp Colts football team will be kicking things into high gear starting Monday with their players reporting. The squad will hand out equipment at 2:30pm. before taking to the field for practice at 3:45pm.

They'll open the regular season on September 3 when they host the Central Collegiate Cyclones.

Dawgs take WCBL title

The Okotoks Dawgs are Western Canadian Baseball League champions, clinching the title with a 4-1 win over the Moose Jaw Miller Express at home Thursday night. 

Okotoks have won their sixth championship in franchise history, and first since 2019. They also won a league record 43 regular season games this summer and went 6-and-1 in the playoffs.

Riders host Lions to open week 11 in CFL

The Saskatchewan Roughriders start a home-and-home with the West Division-leading B-C Lions tonight at Mosaic Stadium. 

The Riders (5-4) beat the Edmonton Elks last week and are just behind the Calgary Stampeders (5-3) for third place in the division. The Lions (7-1) are coming into Regina on a four-game winning streak.

Kick-off is at 8:00pm tonight. 

In the early game, the Edmonton Elks and Ottawa Redblacks square off in a battle of last-place teams in the Nation’s Capital. Tomorrow's CFL action has Montreal hosting Hamilton and Toronto welcoming Calgary.

Canada facing Czechia in World Junior semifinal

Canada takes on Czechia, the country commonly known as the Czech Republic, this afternoon with a spot in the gold medal game on the line at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Edmonton.

Canada beat the Czechs 5-1 in the preliminary round en route to an unbeaten record at the tournament. Czechia finished fourth in Group A but knocked off the defending champions from the United States 4-2 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday to earn a spot in the semifinal.

The game starts at 2:00pm from Rogers Place with the second semifinal between Finland and Sweden following at 6:00pm. The medal games will be on Saturday.

Blue Jays rout Yankees to start weekend set

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. capped off a five-run second inning with a three-run shot to the short porch in right as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 9-2 to start a four-game set at the Bronx. 

George Springer went 5-for-5 and Jose Berrios struck out nine batters over 6.2 innings to get the win as the Blue Jays handed the AL East-leading Yankees their 13th loss in their last 17 games.
