SWAC golf championships held in Maple Creek

Southwest high school golf champions were crowned at the Maple Creek Golf Club on Wednesday. 

Ryder Woods of the Swift Current Comprehensive High School won the boys' championship with a score of 75 with Makstr MacIntyre finishing one stroke back in second. Ayden Ross and Logan Lenz round out the top four who will represent SWAC at provincials. 

On the girls’ side, Niya Friesen from the Comp led the way with a 79 and Mia Riegel, Lyla Thiessen and Caitlin McGregor will join her at provincials next weekend at Jackfish Lodge in Battlefords Provincial Park.

Vladdy hits 100th homer as Jays beat Rays

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. crushed his 100th career home run in the first inning as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Tampa Bay 5-1 last night to clinch their five-game series with the Rays. 

At 23 years old, Vladdy became the youngest Blue Jay to reach 100 homers. His father, Vladimir Guerrero, Sr., was 25 years old when he hit his 100th home run. 

Kevin Gausman will get the start for Toronto as they wrap up the series this afternoon. The Jays come into the game in the first American League wild card spot, one and a half games ahead of Tampa and a half-game ahead of Seattle, and they are also six games back of AL East-leading New York. Both the Yankees and Mariners are off today. 

Roger Federer announces his retirement

Roger Federer has announced that he is retiring from professional tennis after winning 20 Grand Slam titles and 103 ATP Tour events.

The 41-year-old Swiss tennis star made the announcement on social media this morning. He hasn't competed since Wimbledon in July 2021 and has undergone a series of knee operations. 

Federer says his farewell event will be the Laver Cup in London next week.

Chiefs host Chargers in Thursday nighter

Week two of the NFL season kicks off tonight at Arrowhead Stadium with the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Los Angeles Chargers. 

Patrick Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns as KC beat Arizona 44-21 in their season opener on Sunday, while the Chargers are coming off a 24-19 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Chargers QB Justin Herbert threw three touchdowns in that game.

Elks extend Cornelius for two more years

The Edmonton Elks have signed quarterback Taylor Cornelius to a two-year contract extension that will take him through the 2024 season. 

Cornelius is in his second season with the Elks and took over the starter’s job after an injury to Tre Ford. He’s thrown for 1936 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions in eight games this season.

The Elks visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders to kick off week 15 in the CFL on Friday night. 

Blackhawks retiring Hossa's No. 81

The Chicago Blackhawks will be retiring Marian Hossa’s jersey number this season. 

Hossa won three Stanley Cups with Blackhawks in 2010, 2013 and 2015 and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020.

Hossa’s number 81 will be the eighth to hang from the rafters at United Center on November 20th when the Blackhawks host one of his former teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
