The Speedy Dawg Annual Agility Trials were held Saturday and Sunday at Riverside Park in Swift Current, and the hot weather didn't keep dog owners from around the province from bringing their pure and mixed breeds to town.

Lori Langen of the Speedy Dawg Agility Working Group said they had people come from Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Regina, Moose Jaw and even Manitoba for the event.

The trials were composed of four events a day, designed by different judges. The test was to determine whether the handlers could guide their dogs through the course within a time limit and without recording any faults - like going off track or knocking down a horizontal bar 18 inches off the ground.

Langen said the connection they make with others in the dog-agility scene has grown strong over the years. It's a family business for the Langens, who belonged to a dog club when they lived in British Columbia. Since moving to Saskatchewan, they've had Speedy Dawg in town for over a decade now.

Speedy Dawg runs courses in both agility and obedience in Swift Current, but the Langens like to travel and get together for trials outside of Swift Current as well.

"We all travel around Alberta and Saskatchewan to the different dog shows," said Langen. "We had ours this weekend, myself and my husband are going to Lethbridge at the beginning of September for a dog show, and then we're in Prince Albert September 8 and 9 for another agility trial."

Langen said after the trials on Saturday they get together for a catered dinner.

"What we do Saturday night is we all get together after the dog show is done, and we cater a supper at the park. So everybody brings their lawn chairs over."

Langen did say the dogs don't usually get to dig into the scraps.
