A proposed bar and lounge slated to open on Swift Current's eastside was approved by city council last night.

The discretionary use application submitted by Vrindda Retailing Ltd., for the property almost directly across for the Innovation Credit Union iPlex, first appeared at council back in mid-December.

It then re-appeared at council two weeks ago for a public hearing that turned out to be pretty quiet.

"I think we had one verbal reply to the city clerk saying they were in favour of it," Swift Current Mayor Al Bridal said. "Nobody opposed it."

The other step council had to consider besides public input, was if the proposal met their three requirements for approval.

Does it meet the City's zoning bylaws? Does it cause danger or a nuisance to the public? And will it impede other developments in the area?

"Based on the plans and supporting documents submitted by the applicant, there are no concerns with this development," he said.

The building and property located at 170 19th Avenue Northeast is expected to undergo significant renovations to house an Esso gas station, Chester's Chicken, Meltwich, and a bar and lounge.

"I don't know him but they assured me it's a local man, they have a business in town already," Bridal said. "It's very good to see."

Per council's approval, the development will have to include; wheel stops at each parking spot and the landscaping and paving to be completed within a year of the development's completion.
