There is another group of volunteers helping fellow community members who are unable to leave their homes and pick up groceries and other essential items.

Co-founder of the group, Humans Helping Humans Volunteer Group, Courtney Stewart explains,

“When COVID-19 was just hitting Swift Current, a group of us were discussing how this would affect our city and the impact it would have and where people would need help. That’s when we thought of this grocery delivery service.”

Initially, Andrea McCrimmon, head librarian of the Swift Current Library started a support group online called, ‘Swift Current Pandemic Support Network’ focused on providing information and support to people needing assistance.

Stewart adds,

“She started this Facebook support page and that's been an awesome place where people are posting news updates and offering help, so our group was formed as a branch off that.  We thought we should get a group of volunteers ready who could provide groceries and other necessities like toiletries for people who wouldn't be able to leave their home for whatever reason.”

In the beginning, the group numbered about 70 members and a good portion of that group were teachers.  For the first week that teachers were also asked to stay home, the group was well equipped to handle requests for service deliveries.

It did take some time for word to spread about the volunteer group, so numbers were low, about 3 deliveries a week.  Today, the number of requests has risen to 20 per week.

Now that teachers are back to work fulltime in the virtual classroom, Stewart would like people to know that more volunteers would be appreciated.

The main motivation for the Humans Helping Humans Volunteer Group is to do their part to flatten the curve and save lives. Stewart summarizes,

“The purpose of the group is for people to stay home to reduce the traffic around swift current and keep everyone safe and hopefully we will see a decline in the numbers.  It is awesome to find a way to help people in a time like this. It's fantastic to see the way our community comes together in times of stress.”
