The Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats scoring was finally held in check, as they fell 3-1 to the Regina Rebels Sunday afternoon.

Swift actually led 1-0 in the game after a first-period power play goal by Layne Hryhoriw with assists from Brooklyn Colborn and Maddy McCleary.

Unfortunately for head coach Terry Pavely, and his Wildcats squad, it was Regina powerplays that made the difference in the game.

Selfish penalties... stupid penalties - that was the sole difference in the game," Pavely said after the game. "We took a selfish penalty at the end of the second. I told our coaches they are going to score because they get to put out their first unit for 45 seconds, they get to go in and rest, and put their first unit out again."

Pavely's prediction came true, as just 47 seconds into the third period Regina tied the game up on the man-advantage.

"Then, late in the game, we had a long five-on-three we had to kill and eventually we dug it out of our net. We just can’t take penalties against good teams," Pavely said.

The second powerplay goal with 5:35 left in the game, as well as the game's final goal inside three minutes closed out the frustrating game for the Wildcats.

"Probably the worst thing about it is that it really leaves a sour taste in your mouth when you lose a game because of bad penalties," said Pavely. "We probably didn't play that bad of a game. The difference in the shots was basically their powerplay shots against us. A lot of good things (in the game) but right now, frustration because of a lack of discipline."

Certainly one of the good things Pavely noticed on the ice was rookie goaltender Amaya Giraudier, who stopped 31 of 34 shots in the afternoon contest.

“She was very good,” said Pavely. “The last goal there was a rebound there on a tough shot and we didn’t tie up a stick in front. Again they did a good job of getting to the net and outnumbering us there. Sometimes for the D when there is a lot of bodies around you are not sure who to go to. I thought she was really solid in net. We were extremely happy with both our goaltenders this weekend."

The Wildcats have two full weeks of practice until their next league game, plenty of time to regroup and tune up their game. The team is taking a Thanksgiving weekend trip out west for two games against the Kimberley Nitro Express on their "off" weekend as well.

“We have to work on some systems stuff and some penalty kill stuff. We haven’t had any opportunities to really do that yet. We are going to have a good team-building weekend in Kimberley when we go out that way and we need that. We need to set some better expectations. Some of these kids really don’t know what it takes, compete level, practice level, work ethic day in, day out at this level. A weekend away with the team will really be a positive for us,” said Pavely.

The Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats sit at 3-1 on the season, and host the Notre Dame Hounds on October 13 at Fairview West arena.
