Exactly one month after the Swift Current 57's lost their long-time head coach and general manager, they've found a replacement.

On Wednesday afternoon the ball club announced they'd hired Jonas Lovin to fill the position left behind by Joe Carnahan on September 21.

Lovin is currently in his second year as an assistant coach with Concordia University and said the 57's rap across Canada and the United States is one of the main reasons he was interested in the job.

"They have a reputation of taking care of their guys," he said. "Always heard players having good experiences up there. They seem to care about the right things. They value improvement, success, family building, and relationship building."

The 24-year-old right-handed pitcher played for Augustana University (NCAA Division II) from 2015-2018 before finishing his playing career in 2019 with the University of Nebraska-Omaha (NCAA Division I).

Given his experience in the NCAA as a pitcher and his work with pitchers and catchers at Concordia University recently, Lovin has a game plan on how to build the 57's roster.

"The best teams are the ones that have the best pitching staffs," he said. "It's a team game and you need hitters that can score runs and drive the baseball but I think any foundation of any team should start with the pitching staff around dudes that are going to go out there and get the job done for you on the mound."

Carnahan may have stepped away from the position but last night he shared some advice with Lovin on the recruiting process and what it's like to guide a Swift Current ball club.

"We do have guys that were supposed to come up last year that are interested in returning so I'm going to reach out to them," Lovin said. "See where they're at with things, see if they're still interested in coming back. After we have that established we'll know what our needs are going forward."

Along with recruiting players for the 2021 57's squad, Lovin will be looking for an assistant coach to round out his coaching staff.
