It'll be raining cats and dogs in downtown Swift Current tomorrow — sort of.

The Swift Current SPCA is hosting its second Adoptathon event at Dufresne Furniture and Appliances from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with pets, vendors, kids' activities, and a raffle.

Fundraising manager for the local shelter, Ashley Muhle, explained that when one animal is adopted, a space opens up for them to help another in need.

“We are running a promotion right now for 50 per cent off of all dogs [adoption fees],” she said. “We are over capacity. We currently can't take any more dogs in, so we are trying to find homes for everybody so we can help more.”

Currently there are nine dogs and 45 cats waiting in shelter to find homes of their own, with several animals also currently in foster care. Three of the available puppies have grown up in shelter life and are now five months old.

The shelter even declared an intake freeze in May (which has since been partially lifted), when they could not accept any canine surrenders or strays due to being over capacity.

At the adoption event, people can expect to see a few available cats and dogs, a bouncy castle and sparkle tattoos, and Pizza Stop serving up fresh slices.

There will also be applications to foster, adopt, volunteer, and become a member of the SPCA for anyone who is interested in getting involved or adding a new four-legged member to the family.
