Saskatchewan has set a "first" for tow truck driver safety.

Legislation was passed yesterday to include blue lighting with the current amber lighting on tow trucks for added visibility when activated.

Saskatchewan has become the first jurisdiction in Canada to introduce the two-colour lighting combination for tow trucks, while the rest of the country still relies solely on amber lighting.

This news is certainly promising for Cindy Rempel, part-owner of Low Cost Towing in Swift Current.

"It's exciting news for us because it shows that obviously there is an issue of tow trucks not being recognized out on the roadways. Now by having the distinctive lighting, people can be that much more aware that there's a tow truck on the side of the road and not just someone with a yellow flashing light on their truck," she said.

Rempel also shares that talks about added lighting had been in the works for a while, but the loss of a southeast tow truck driver on March 7th definitely made its mark on the decision.

"I just think that the death of Courtney Schaefer just proved that it really needed to happen sooner than later. I think it was important that we had that rally in March. It showed the government that we're all in support of trying to get that awareness out there," she said.

The legislation for this decision was introduced and passed all in the same day, which is noteably a rare occurrence due to the requirement of unanimous support of the Legislature.

Tow truck operators will be able to install blue lights once the bill receives assent and is officially proclaimed, which is scheduled to happen at the end of May.

SGI will also be engaging the public in awareness efforts to help with the education about the new blue lights soon to be appearing on tow trucks.
