It’s officially Frontier Days in Swift Current, marked this morning by the ceremonial branding at the annual W.W. Smith Pancake Breakfast.

Market Square was alive with community members filling their plates of fresh breakfast and chatting about the lineup of fair activities.

Chris Martens with the Ag & Ex introduced the day and guest speakers, which included Swift Current Mayor Al Bridal.

“Our community truly comes alive with high energy during Frontier Days and this year will be no exception,” he said. “Upholding tradition while adding exciting attractions; we sincerely hope all visitors will enjoy the exhibits, entertainment, rodeo, midway rides as well as the kiddie’s parade later today and the Canada Day parade on Saturday morning. It's going to be a fantastic fair. I'm deeply privileged to be part of the celebrations and I'm proud of how Swift Current’s Ag & Ex showcases our city and southwest Saskatchewan. Cheers for 85 years and counting."

Pancake batter was hot on the pans all morning, but plates were momentarily forgotten during the burning of the brand. Martens invited the 2023 Frontier Day Parade Marshalls, Doug and Maxine Smith, to step up to the stage for the privilege.

When asked afterward how it felt, their replies came in unison, “An honour.”

“We’ve been to a lot of fairs and the next one is always the best one,” Doug said. “We’ll see how much we can take in this year.”

Maxine added that they have grandkids showing heifers and steers, keeping the couple busy over the next few days as they head out to the events.

All proceeds from the breakfast, sponsored by W.W. Smith, will once again be handed over to the Canadian Mental Health Association Swift Current Branch.

Chad Parenteau, one of the managing partners at the local insurance broker, said they have been long-time partners with the CMHA.

“It’s always been a great [organization] to help out, especially with them moving into their new building,” he added.

The Frontier Days Ambassador, Emma Brost, also stepped up to the stage to present The Center with a large cheque from the Ag & Ex’s Jeans for Teens fundraiser.

A total of $1,000 was collected from local businesses who allowed employees to ditch their formal wear for a pair of jeans throughout the week, for a small fee of $5.
