It will now be 30 years since a Canadian NHL team has captured the Stanley Cup after this country's last two hopes were eliminated from the playoffs over the weekend.

After the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a 3-2 OT loss to the Florida Panthers on Friday to end their playoff run, the Edmonton Oilers were sent packing with a 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday night at Rogers Place. Jonathan Marchessault had a natural hat trick with three-straight goals in the second period for Vegas, who won the series in six games.

The 1993 Montreal Canadiens remain the last Canadian-based team to win the Stanley Cup.

Vegas moves on to the Western Conference Final to face either Seattle or Dallas, who play game seven of their series tonight. Florida takes on the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final.

Canada off to 2-0 start at Worlds

Team Canada opened the IIHF World Hockey Championship with a 6-0 win over Latvia on Friday and a 5-2 win over Slovenia early Sunday morning.

Former Broncos goalie Joel Hofer is on the roster for Canada, who continue preliminary round action against Slovakia this morning.

Jays complete sweep of Braves with walk-off win

Danny Jansen hit a walk-off two-run single in the ninth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied to beat Atlanta 6-5 to complete a three-game sweep of the NL East-leading Braves. George Springer also hit a home run for the Jays, who improved to 12-3 at Rogers Centre.

The Jays start a four-game set with the New York Yankees tonight with Alek Manoah starting the opener.

NBA Conference Finals set

Jayson Tatum dropped 51 points, the most in a game seven in NBA playoff history, as the Boston Celtics ran past the Philadelphia 76ers 112-88 to punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference Final, where they'll face the eighth-seeded Miami Heat, who defeated the New York Knicks in six games.

Out west, LeBron James and the LA Lakers, who eliminated the defending champion Golden State Warriors, will face Jamal Murray's Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Final. The Nuggets defeated the Phoenix Suns in six games in their second-round matchup.

Incidentally, the four teams remaining are the same final four that played in the "Orlando Bubble" in the 2020 Playoffs. The Lakers won the championship that year over the Heat.
