Multiple cars of a Canadian Pacific Kansas City Rail (CPKC) freight train derailed on the weekend about 10 kilometres east of Piapot.

According to an emailed statement from CPKC Rail, approximately 12 cars were involved in the incident that occurred around 1 p.m. on Saturday. The rail cars were a combination of loaded and empty, and the loaded were carrying agricultural products.

There were no injuries and no threat to public safety.

CPKC crews immediately responded to the scene Saturday afternoon, and the rail line east of Piapot reopened early Sunday after the completion of track repairs and safety inspections.

The cause is currently under investigation.
