Earlier this week, the CRTC announced it would be enforcing telephone service providers to do more to filter unwanted or illegitimate calls for their customers.

Greg Jacobs, Sasktel's External Communications Manager, explains the CRTC's decision is broken up into two steps.

"The first 90 day period, the CRTC is bringing together their Interconnection Steering Committee - which Sasktel is a part of - to brainstorm ideas on how we can do this from a network level.

So this is getting all telephone service providers together to brainstorm solutions.

After that, we still have another 90 days to go back to the CRTC with our proposed solutions before they can approve.

Once approved, we would start implementing the process," he said.

After the process has been completed, Sasktel customers will then be able to opt into a filter service.

The service will have Sasktel filtering the calls, instead of each individual customer filtering calls themselves.

As the announcement was just recently made, Sasktel has no projected date available for when the service will be ready.
