The Okotoks Dawgs opened the WCBL Championship series with an 8-0 win over the Medicine Hat Mavericks at Seaman Stadium on Tuesday night. 

Brendan Luther and Alejandro Cazorla hit home runs for the Dawgs and Graham Brunner struck out eight batters as he and three relievers combined for the four-hit shutout. 

The Dawgs can claim their second-straight WCBL championship with a win tonight at Athletic Park in Medicine Hat. Game three, if necessary, will be back in Okotoks on Thursday.

Action continues at Box Lacrosse Nationals

Blake Simpson of the Swift Current Rampage had an assist as Team Saskatchewan fell 18-1 to Team BC in boys’ U13 action Tuesday at the Box Lacrosse National Championships in Regina. 

Blake is one of a number of local Rampage players playing for Saskatchewan at the event

Saskatchewan also tied New Brunswick 4-4 and beat Nova Scotia 8-1 in boys’ U15, and the U15 girls’ team was blanked 8-0 by Ontario and 6-0 by BC. The boys’ U17 team beat Nova Scotia 6-3 and the U17 girls tied Nova Scotia 3-3.

Games continue today through Saturday.

Bichette forces in go-ahead run on HBP as Jays edge Phillies

Cavan Biggio was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 last night. 

Jordan Romano got two strikeouts in the ninth for his 29th save of the season after missing 16 games with a sore back. 

Kevin Gausman starts for the Jays as the two-game series wraps up tonight.

Habs flip Petry to Red Wings

The Montreal Canadiens have traded defenceman Jeff Petry to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Gustav Lindstrom and a conditional draft pick. 

Petry came to the Habs from the Pittsburgh Penguins only nine days ago in a three-team deal that sent Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks to Pittsburgh. Petry scored five goals and 31 points with the Penguins last season.

England beats Australia to set up Women's World Cup Final

Laura Hemp scored the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute and Alessia Russo added an insurance goal with four minutes left as England beat co-host Australia 3-1 in the second semi-final of the FIFA Women's World Cup in Sydney this morning.

The Lionesses will face Spain in a battle of first-time Women's World Cup finalists on Sunday morning. Australia takes on Sweden in the third-place match on Saturday.
