At last night's city council in Swift Current, Family Literacy Week was declared.

The Chinook Regional Library Board Chair Tanya Selk was there along with Director Jean McKendry, and they talked about some things they'll be doing to encourage more people to read.

There are several things on the agenda for the week, and some beings who haven't graced the planet with their presence in many years are the theme.

On Thursday Paleontologist Dr. Emily Banforth of Eastend's T. rex Discovery Centre will be reading Frieda Wishinsky's 'Danger Dinosaurs' at the Swift Current Branch to Grade 3s.

There is also a reading in Maple Creek that day, put on by and readings in Ponteix and Shaunavon Friday.

The goal of the week is to encourage families to read 20 minutes a day to improve literacy, and in turn, their opportunities in life.

Councillor Bruce Deg said taking time to work on reading is huge.

"Literacy is such an important factor in our world," he said. "I feel that if you can read, you can learn anything. So I really appreciate the fact that we are celebrating that with Family Literacy Week this week."

Selk thanks the City for their "ongoing support" of the library and for having Family Literacy Week.
