The government of Saskatchewan has lofty goals for growing the province to a population of 1.4 million by 2030, and the latest stats on how far the province has to go to reach that mark is in.

The third-quarter growth report for 2019 announced that the province's population grew by 4,195 people in the quarter, leading the population at around 1,178,000.

This is the 54th consecutive quarter of growth in the province.

Everett Hindley, Swift Current MLA, said that they are focused on continuing that streak of growth to help fulfil their goals in the next decade.

"It shows that we're on the right track, and people continue to move to Saskatchewan to establish their families here in Saskatchewan."

He said that he thought the growth of just above 4,000 was about on par with past quarterly growths.

Also outlined in the growth plan for the next decade was the addition of 100,000 jobs in Saskatchewan.

He added that Swift Current wouldn't be left out of that increase as they work towards adding population.

"We talked [in the growth plan] about increasing oil production by 25 per cent to 600,000 per day, we talked about tripling the growth of Saskatchewan's technology sector and investing in infrastructure, and also promoting the quality and sustainability of our province's ag and natural resource products."

"We want to be the most competitive jurisdiction in all of Canada when it comes to these sorts of things, and there's a role there for Swift Current there I think."

The value-added ag sector is one area that the province is focusing on as well.

"We are certainly a hub for oil and gas, we're a hub for agriculture products, we're a hub for manufacturing in this area too," Hindley said. "Swift Current is going to be, the southwest is going to be a key part of this growth plan and being able to achieve these population targets, and I think we're going to be looked upon to be kind of leading the way in that regard."

Hindley added that he thinks the future is bright for Swift Current and southwest Saskatchewan.
