An important weekend for the Home Hardware Midget AAA Legionnaires saw a two-game sweep of the Tisdale Trojans.

The Legionnaires, who are currently fifth place in the SMAAAHL (21-9-0-3, 45 pts), claimed all four points from the two games, allowing them to climb within three points of the fourth-place Trojans (22-7-1-3, 48 pts).

Saturday was the higher-scoring contest between the two teams at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex, with the Legionnaires winning 4-2.

Tisdale was the hotter team to start the game, scoring a power play goal five minutes in to take a 1-0 lead into the second period.

They'd add a second 4:33 into the second to take a two-goal lead.

"We were just really slow in the first period. Coming out in the second, it was like we flicked a switch and away we went," said Legionnaires forward Mason Strutt.

Swift responded seven minutes after Tisdale stretched their lead, as Mason Strutt took a cross-crease pass from Rin Beny and buried it past outstretched Trojans goalie Tanner Martin at the back post.

Heading into the third period down 2-1 but with momentum, the Legionnaires put their foot on the gas.

Strutt scored his second of the game with 13:27 left in the game to tie it up.

Then in the game's final minutes the Legionnaires scored twice. Hunter Lamb put Swift ahead with 2:14 left, and Ty Muench added an empty-netter 40 seconds later to seal the win.

Cody Levesque stopped 34 of 36 Trojans shots for the W.

"It's nice to win games like that against a team that we have a good chance of playing in the playoffs," said Strutt, who was playing in his first game since December 17 after suffering a dislocated shoulder. "It shows how much character this team has - it was a really good game to watch and play in."

"At the beginning of the year were we strong enough to come back against a good team like Tisdale? I don't know," added Legionnaires head coach Darren Evjen. "Right now we're getting a little bit harder mentally to handle these situations and that makes a big difference."

Swift extended their winning streak to seven-straight after Saturday's game, although that didn't seem to be on the minds of the team during the hard-fought win.

"You don't even really think about it on the bench, you're thinking about the game and just finding a way to tie it up and then a way to get ahead - doing those things and the little things. This is more than a win streak I think right now. It's a big weekend for us playing Tisdale if we're going to try and catch them."

Sunday provided a much more consistent effort over three periods for the Legionnaires, coming away with a 2-1 win in another tightly-contested game.

"It felt like a playoff game out there - it was tough sledding for both teams," Evjen noted. "I thought we put in a lot better game today. Our D played a strong game - we weren't where we wanted to be yesterday, but they really responded and played a heck of a game. Our forwards were getting the puck more, creating in the O-zone and defending."

Neither team found the back of the net in the first period. For the second straight game Tisdale carried a lead through 40 minutes on a power play goal six minutes into the middle frame.

Although once again Swift battled back in the third period. Owen Ozar scored 2:30 into the third period, and Strutt scored his third of the weekend with 6:32 remaining for the game's final goal.

Levesque was in net again for the Legionnaires on Sunday, making 31 saves for the win, Swift Current's eighth-straight.

"It feels awesome. Hopefully we can keep it going," said Strutt. "If we keep the same formula we've been having, I think we'll be alright."

With the Legionnaires next on the road against the Regina Pat Canadians on Wednesday, the schedule is nearing the final ten games of the regular season - just 11 remain.

"It's not going to get easier - everybody is fighting for some reason or for something. Regina is fighting at the top, and the other teams that are trying to make playoffs - we were in that spot last year - everyday is Game 7 to make playoffs," Evjen shared. "This is the time of year that's fun - it's hard but it's when you get the best out of people."

Puck drop between the Legionnaires and Pat Canadians is 8 p.m. from the Co-operators Centre in Regina.
