A boxer from Swift Current won 'Fight of the Night' at a competition in the Village of Shell Lake over the weekend.

The Big River Bash was held at Shell Lake School gymnasium this past Saturday beginning around 7 p.m.

Twenty-year-old boxer, Jaden Toye, was ecstatic to win the fight against long-standing challenger, Cole Ahenakew, from the Red Wolf Boxing Club.

"I was the main event of the evening, which is nice," he said. "I boxed Ahenakew, he's beat me twice before; first when I was 17 and also a couple of months ago.

"I was Provincial Champ for four years until he beat me, so getting this win felt really good."

Toye grew up in Swift Current and noted that boxing is a sport he connected with in his youth that gives him a sense of purpose and he hopes it will always be a part of his life.

"I love when they dim the lights and everyone's waiting to see the best of the best go at it, and I get to put on a great show for the people," added Toye.

He will next travel to Brandon, Man. for a fight on Friday, June 14.
