Two local sisters recently received a prestigious honour.

Alexandria and Eve Boss were both recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award presented to them by Swift Current Mayor Dennis Perrault this week.

The award encourages young people to discover hidden talents, develop untapped leadership potential, make a difference in their community, and explore the wonders of the great outdoors.

In response to the importance of volunteering the girls said it's their opportunity to say thank you.

"It's a good way to give back to the community, they have already done so much for us and given a lot of opportunities so we just wanted to do something. It is also showing that we care about our community, just helping around and doing our best."

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program counts as a Special Project credit with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education. It can be part of a high school student’s curriculum.

The girls said winning the award is a representation of all their hard work.

"It took a lot of hours and a lot of time and there was a lot of effort put into it. Kind of just showing that we put this time into working hard, putting hours in and helping our community, improving our own skillset, and things like that."

The award is divided up into four sections:  Service, Physical Recreation, Skill, and Adventurous Journey and there are three award levels Bronze, Silver, and Gold each of which requires an increased level of commitment and effort. The girls plan on working to obtain each award.
