February was a memorable month for the Swift Current Christian Taekwondo.

The club celebrated a decade in business, a benchmark, that Owner and Head Instructor Gary Voysey thought was a pipedream when first starting up.

"We've just been blessed with a phenomenal community here in Swift Current," Voysey said has been key to their longevity. "I don't think Swift Current really gives itself enough credit sometimes. I mean there's a humble spirit here but holy smokes, you guys are phenomenal."

The organization began in 2012 at the Church of the Open Bible with six members and moved to Walker Place the following year due to growth. That number has soared to nearly 150 members a decade later as they occupy their third facility on 4th Avenue NW.

One thing Voysey has enjoyed doing annually is hosting a Breaking Boards for Freedom event that's brought in around $70,000 and donated to either the International Justice Mission or the Southwest Crisis Services.

"For me, it's something I love to boast about with other taekwondo school owners, not just here in the province but actually all throughout North America with my friends and mentors," he explained. "I refer back to the people of Saskatchewan and in particular here in Swift Current, just how giving they are."

The club has turned out more than 20 black belts during its time and Voysey believes they'll be around for at least another decade or two at this rate.

"No signs of any slowing down or stopping," he said.

A pair of upcoming events for the Swift Current Christian Taekwondo include kung fu for kids and a health and fitness workshop (on April 2).
