The town of Gull Lake recently received some positive news, as they've been approved for just over $140,000 in funding from Saskatchewan's Municipal Economic Enhancement Program for a trio of projects.

The largest portion of the dough ($85,000) will be spent on the Elks Hall which was recently handed over to the town and requires some work to the basement and a roof replacement.

Renovations to the basement of the building have already been completed and the roof project is set to begin August 10, with both totaling around $113,000 to fix. However the town also received some federal funding ($25,000) that will be combined with a recreation grant to cover the tab.

Gull Lake Mayor Blake Campbell said he was very pleased to get the funding for the town of around 1,000 people.

"We were really pleased that we were able to do the Elks Hall at no cost to the taxpayers," he said. "That was exciting."

The second-largest chunk of the money ($40,000) will be spent on the town's landfill which is almost at maximum capacity.

"Essentially we're down to our last pit right now," he said. "When that's done we have to cap and close the landfill and then it gets converted to using bins. We'll have waste bins instead of pits, we won't have pits anymore."

Campbell believes the conversion from the pits to bins will occur sometime this fall or next spring.

And the third and final project, lagoon dredging at the wastewater plant, was given $25,340 in funds.

"I think it's every 5-7 years you get a buildup from effluence going into the lagoon and it collects on the bottom so you have to dredge all of that out," Campbell said. "Just because otherwise your inlet would get blocked into the lagoon."
