Halloween can be a time to get in costume, celebrate traditions, and get some candy, but the Swift Current City RCMP are reminding residents to stay safe while doing so.

Morgan Sibley, a constable and acting corporal with the Swift Current City RCMP, reminded both parents and kids to not lose sight of safety while on the hunt for candy.

"Once kids are trick or treating, they need to be cognizant of a few things, such as traffic out there, the streets are going to be busy, if they're young, make sure they're being accompanied by an adult, and look both ways before you cross the street."

He said another thing parents should be mindful of is the candy that their kids get.

Before letting your child consume any, you should inspect all of it and ensure it is safe.

Sibley added that kids should also ensure that they are easily visible in their festive costumes.

"If you have a costume that is a dark colour, try and have something available on your person that would identify you for traffic safety reasons."

"We don't have any children getting struck by vehicles, and that kind of thing."

Halloween vandalism has been kept to a minimum in Swift Current over the past few years, with Sibley saying they had only received a handful of calls regarding such acts.

He said as is the case with many things, there is strength in numbers.

"Travel in trick or treating groups if possible, and if they see anything suspicious or are approached by anyone suspicious, notify a parent, or if its serious, notify the police immediately."

He said that the Swift Current City RCMP have received a minimal amount of reports of suspicious people on Halloween, but added that it is always a possibility.

There will be an increased police presence throughout the holiday. They will be keeping an eye out for suspicious activities or people.
