As mother nature runs its course - it's going to cost the City of Swift Current a bit of money.

A bank erosion in Riverside Park is starting to encroach on the Chinook Pathway and before it causes any more damage, the City is getting it fixed up.

Mitch Minken, general manager of infrastructure and operations with the City of Swift Current, said the project to stabilize the bank has already begun.

"That's life with having a creek in your City," he said. "We're stabilizing the bank in two or three locations a year just to make sure it doesn't erode away and damage some of our facilities."

According to Minken the City struggled a bit to find contractors for the project and the correct materials needed.

"There will be some proper sized rocks," he explained. "Usually in these stabilization ones we will use matting or fabric to tie the rocks together and tie it to the dirt once we put the dirt material in there so that it doesn't erode again. So it gives it the strength until all of the vegetation gets in place to keep it stable."

Over the year's the City has had to perform multiple facelifts on various banks including a big one in 2011 on the Chinook Golf Course and more recently on the Elmwood Golf Course.

"We've been really fortunate in the technology that's there once we get in there do it properly it's pretty stable from there on," Minken said. "We haven't had any failure of ones that we've done."

He also acknowledged there is some erosion on the south side of the City but they've decided it's not hurting anything, so they will just let nature run its course.
