Over 50 different non-profit clubs and organizations with roots in Swift Current will be receiving a cheque in the near future.

Swift Current city council approved 61 requests from 54 different organizations for funding last week during their regular meeting, dividing up the lump sum of $114,900 they obtained from the Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Support Grant.

"This grant program allows non-profit organizations whose purpose is the delivery of sport, culture, and recreation programming the opportunity to secure funding to operate or advance the scope of their programming," the city of Swift Current's General Manager of Community Services Jim Jones said. "The city of Swift Current partners with many non-profit organizations with the desire to enhance and provide sport, culture, and recreation opportunities for all levels of competition in our community."

The funding being given out is for programming running between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022, and was applied for by the non-profit organizations before the city's deadline of February 14.

The city's Recreation and Parks Board then sifted through the 61 applications with a total ask of $181,583 making some revisions and following the criteria laid out by Saskatchewan Lotteries for the funds before passing their recommendations onto city council.

"The Community Support Grant Program has been built on two components," he said. "A target component which must receive at least 30 per cent of the total funding and a base component which is eligible for the remainder of the funding. 'Target populations' include groups such as indigenous people, seniors, women, youth at risk, the economically disadvantaged, identifiable minorities, persons with a disability, and single-parent families."

The largest chunk of the pie ($25,981) will be going towards the city's Summer Parks Play Program.
